Ismail Mat Hussin is from Kelantan has been doing the traditional Malay painting on cotton since 1970. He learned his skill from art teachers Yusof Abdullah and nenowned artist, Khalil Ibrahim.
Ismail said the fisrt step to his works involved sketching lines on white cotton cloth with charcoal. After that, niddels dipped in hot wax are used to draw on the cloth. Next, the cloth is dipped in different coloured dyes. This process is then repeated seven or eight times until the art piece is completed. The wax is removed by soaking the cloth in chemically treated hot water.

Ismail admitted that his batik painting technics involved a paintstaking and labourious process. In his superb rendering of the human figures, he executes Kelantanese women in their languid postures cutting down a hard bargainer in the market place, in harmonious colours disperse among the head dresses, blouses and sarongs.
Ismail Mat Hussin is the only remaining batik painter in Kelantan who uses this technics. His artworks are being collected by Petronas, National Art Gallery, many corparates and in private collection locally and abroad.
